Art & Politics Film Series: Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro)

This adaptation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in a modern favela in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, won both the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for best foreign language film that year. The city stars in this romantic tragedy, in which French director Marcel Camus offered his own version of Brazilian culture, and helped introduce the world to bossa nova music, while at the same time romanticizing harsh realities of class and race. The Art & Politics Film Series is organized by Robert Wiesenberger, the Clark's associate curator of contemporary projects and Horace Ballard, curator of American art at the Williams College Museum of Art. Each film begins with a brief introduction and is followed by light refreshments and conversation in the Manton Reading Room.
