A History of Prison Portraits: Lecture by Olivier Meslay

In this two-part lecture series, Hardymon Director Olivier Meslay explores the often-untold history of portraits painted, and more recently photographed, within prisons. Existing at the crossroads of politics, law, and identity, these portraits offer a unique opportunity to think simultaneously about the evolution of art and the state of society. Inspired by Meslay's most recent Williams graduate seminar, this series explores how these representations express our complex relationship to prisons and imprisoned communities. (This is part 1)
